SOFX / Sinforiano Diaz / Omeed Goodzari at The Handsome Woman 7.26.11

Basements are probably my favorite place to see bands. Check out these videos of Sinforiano Diaz and Omeed Goodzari playing at The Handsome Woman (Willimantic, CT) on July 26th, as well as some photos of the host band, SOFX.

A Silver Mt. Zion comes to CT/W.MA

A Silver Mt. Zion (or whatever they're calling themselves these days*) is touring again, and to me, that's news worth sharing. Their epic records are fascinating, and their live performances are fantastic. I've only seen them twice: once in Portland, Maine at Space, and once at the Pearl Street in Northampton. Both shows were great. ASMZ throws out the traditional guitar-bass-drums-vocals band makeup and focuses on violins and vocals. Typically, all the musicians on stage (there are often more than five) sing, experimenting with a variety of harmonies and rounds. They're impressive, so I'm excited to see them once again.

ASMZ will be hitting the Pearl Street again on Friday, September 30th and the Wadsworth Atheneum on Wednesday, October 5th.

If you don't listen to ASMZ, go out right now and purchase He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace the Corner of Our Rooms. Turn off the lights, turn up the volume, and let the sound cascade down around your ear drums. That's why I love this band.

Beneath this stone deaths prisoner lies,
This stone shall move the saint shall rise,
Whats now conceal'd beneath this dust,
Shall also rise among the just.

Death leaves a melancholy gloom,
It makes an empty seat,
Ye living mortals all must come,
and join this long retreat.

No age nor sex
Can death defy,
Think mortals
What it is to die.

So man Lieth down and
deth not till ye Heavens be no
more.

Hark: deaths Motto from the
Siilent Tomb
With awful voice proclaims out
Mortals, Prepare for you must come and mingle with the
Ghastly Crowd.
